چکیده

Polynomial Chaos (PC) expansions are used to propagate parametric uncertainties in an ocean general circulation model. The computations focus on shorttime, high-resolution simulations of the Gulf of Mexico (GOM), using the HYbrid Coordinate Ocean Model (HYCOM), with wind stresses corresponding to hurricane Ivan. A sparse quadrature approach is used to determine the PC coefficients which provides a detailed representation of the stochastic model response. The quality of the PC representation is first examined through a systematic refinement of the number of resolution levels. The PC representation of the stochastic model response is then utilized to compute distributions of quantities of Research supported by the Office of Naval Research, Award N00014-101-0498. A. Conclusions are finally drawn regarding limitations of local perturbations and variance-based assessment and concerning potential application of the present methodology to inverse problems and to uncertainty management.

A priori testing of sparse adaptive polynomial chaos expansions using an ocean general circulation model database

This work explores the implementation of an adaptive strategy to design sparse ensembles of oceanic simulations suitable for constructing polynomial chaos surrogates. We use a recently developed pseudo-spectral algorithm that is based on a direct application of the Smolyak sparse grid formula and that allows the use of arbitrary admissible sparse grids. The adaptive algorithm is tested using an...

3D Modeling of Wind-Driven Circulation In The Northern Indian Ocean During Monsoon

Abstract The purpose of this research is to design and identify some of the natures and characteristics of high-resolution surface currents in the Northern Indian Ocean. The pattern of 3D circulation of the Wind-driven surface currents, Sea surface temperature (SST) and Sea Surface Salinity (SSS) distribution in the Northern Indian Ocean using The MIT general circulation model (MITgcm) with ho...

Evaluating the performance of Atmosphere-Ocean Global Circulation Models (AOGCM) in simulating temperature variable in Ahwaz and Abadan stations

Climate changes caused by global warming has presented challenges to human society. Studying the Changes of climate variables in the future decades by using output data’s of Atmosphere-Ocean Global Circulation Models (AOGCM) is a way of perusing climate fluctuation in a region. In this study, the focus is on the AOGCM proceeds in simulating of variable temperature in Ahwaz and Abadan stations. ...

Assessing the ability of the C projection-age method to constrain the circulation of the past in a 3-D ocean model

[1] Radiocarbon differences between benthic and planktonic foraminifera (B-P ages) and radiocarbon projection ages are both used to determine changes of the past ocean circulation rate. A global 3-D ocean circulation model with a constant modern ocean circulation is used to study which method is less influenced by atmospheric DC variations. Three factors cause uncertainties: first, the long equ...

Evaluation of the performance of the CMIP5 General Circulation Models in predicting the Indian Ocean Monsoon precipitation over south Sistan and Baluchestan, using the past hydrological changes in the region

1-Introduction Climate change refers to any significant change in the existing mean climatic conditions within a certain time period (Jana and Majumder, 2010; Giorgi, 2006). Earth's climate change through history has happened (Nakicenovic et al., 2000; Bytnerowicz et al., 2007). 2-Materials and methods In this study, daily precipitation and daily maximum (Tmax) and daily minimum (Tmin) tempera...
